Memorial Health System (MHS) in Gulfport, Mississippi, has collaborated with InVita Healthcare Technologies, Oracle Health, and the Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency (MORA) to enhance the organ and tissue donation process. This partnership has led to the launch of the iReferral healthcare interoperability platform at two MHS facilities on May 1, 2024.

The iReference system allows clinical users of the Oracle Health Electronic Health Record system to electronically refer potential organ and tissue donors to the InVita iTransplant System used by MORA. This replaces the previous manual and time-consuming donor referral process, enabling healthcare providers and nurses to focus more on clinical care and comply with federal requirements for donation and transplantation.

Maria Brobst, the senior vice president and chief nursing officer at Memorial Health System, expressed pride in leading the way to revolutionize the organ and tissue donation process in Mississippi through the iReferral platform. This collaboration aims to streamline operations, honor the gift of life, and allow healthcare professionals to prioritize exceptional care.

Verma Seema, the executive vice president and CEO of Oracle Health and Life Sciences, emphasized the importance of automating and expediting donor referrals to save lives. With over 100,000 patients awaiting organ transplants nationwide, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services regulations mandate hospitals to refer potential donors to their designated Organ Procurement Organization (OPO) promptly.

Haratio Keys, chief development officer at MORA, applauded Memorial’s implementation of the iReferral system. He believes that this technology will ease the burden on healthcare providers while maximizing MORA’s impact on individuals awaiting life-saving transplants.

Wade Liu, the Chief Product Officer at InVita Healthcare Technologies, congratulated MORA and Memorial Health for being the first in the state to implement iReferral. He emphasized the critical role of donation and transplantation in saving lives and expressed pride in supporting this work through the iReferral platform.

Memorial Health System has been serving the Mississippi Gulf Coast since 1946 and offers comprehensive clinical programs and unique medical specialties. MORA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving and improving lives through organ, eye, and tissue donation. InVita Healthcare Technologies provides software technologies for medical environments, including those related to donation and transplantation.

Overall, the partnership between MHS, InVita Healthcare Technologies, Oracle Health, and MORA aims to digitize and streamline the organ and tissue donor referral process, ultimately increasing opportunities for patients to become donors and saving lives in Mississippi. Through innovative technology and collaboration, the organizations involved are paving the way for a more efficient and effective organ donation process.
