Optus customers targeted by cyber criminals pretending to offer outage compensation

Optus is advising customers to avoid clicking on any links sent via message or email from the telco amid a major phishing scam.

Hackers are pretending to be from Optus, encouraging recipients to click on a link where they can purport to apply for compensation from the telco.

Optus confirmed it will adjust the way it communicates with its 10.2 million customers to limit the impact of cyber scams, by removing links from official messages and emails.

“We’re aware of phishing messages claiming to be from Optus regarding the outage,” an Optus spokeswoman said.

“To help address this and for each customer’s peace of mind, we will not be sending communications (email or SMS) about this outage with links. If customers have received a communication claiming to be from Optus, do not click any links.”
