Optus and Cisco Collaborate to Strengthen Network Security in Australia | VoIP Review

Optus, an Australian telecommunications company, has announced a strategic partnership with Cisco to enhance network security for its enterprise and commercial clients. This collaboration is in response to the growing complexity of cyber threats, shortages in critical skills, strict regulatory requirements, and the rise in remote work arrangements.

The shift towards remote work has led to a greater reliance on on-demand network services and software-as-a-service, increasing the vulnerability to security breaches for devices and software. To tackle this issue, Optus will introduce a wide range of network security services powered by Cisco.

The revamped Optus Secure Network Operations Centre will see significant improvements, supported by a suite of new Cisco security products designed to provide enhanced security solutions. Investments will also be made to bolster the Optus Integrated Network Operations Centre and Security Operations Centre.

The new platform will include services like Cisco-Powered Secure Firewall and Managed Secure Service Edge, along with advanced email security, vulnerability management, and integration with Cisco Meraki and ThousandEyes to enhance network protection.

Danny Price, Vice President of Enterprise and Business Services and Customer Delivery at Optus, emphasized the company’s commitment to delivering secure and reliable network solutions for its customers. He stated that Optus is dedicated to addressing complex security challenges while optimizing performance and reliability, particularly in today’s increasingly vulnerable environments.

In recent years, Optus has faced cybersecurity challenges, including a data breach in September 2022 that affected millions of current and former customers. The breach resulted in the illegal acquisition of sensitive information such as names, dates of birth, addresses, and contact details. As a result, the Australian Communications and Media Authority initiated legal action against Optus, alleging inadequate protection of customer data from unauthorized access.

These incidents underscore the critical importance of robust security measures. By teaming up with Cisco, Optus aims to provide enhanced security solutions to protect its customers’ networks and provide peace of mind in an evolving digital landscape.
