Even more than most presidents, President Donald Trump wants to draw attention to his executive order signings. He often turns these events into impromptu press conferences and seems to enjoy changing governments with the stroke of a pen. But on Tuesday, Trump ignored the fanfare and privately signed an executive order issuing new regulations on artificial intelligence. Why the untypical lack of cameras? Maybe because he realized the order made him look like a weakling.
The order supposedly reverses Trump’s previously cautious stance toward the AI industry. But what seems like a step toward regulation is actually a gift to the tech industry. The process is so tenuous that it allows participating companies to assert their concern for the public good without offering little in return. Part of the reason it’s weak is because Trump has allowed key industry players to persuade him to water it down to the point where they believe it can no longer stand in their way…
