Open RAN, the movement in wireless telecommunications, to break up hardware and software, to open interfaces and to cut costs, is picking up speed. With Open RAN and the associated “virtualization”, operators can execute software-based network functions on standard commercial off-the-shelf servers (COTS). With non-proprietary, open interfaces, MNOs can use one vendor’s radios with another provider’s servers, etc. – which was previously not possible. As the Open RAN architecture expands and becomes commonplace, components and technology continue to evolve. Below are our predictions for 2022 and beyond in terms of technology:
