Personal work is fast becoming a habit in Silicon Valley and the larger Bay Area tech community as the appeal of living outside the tech bubble and working in sweats is likely to linger long after the pandemic.

Case in point, a report from Protocol found that of the 5,000+ employees who work for cloud computing company VMware, only 99 showed up by day one of the company’s 16-building headquarters in Palo Alto.

A shared estimate is that VMware headquarters could accommodate up to 8,000 employees.

Rich Lang, a VMware executive, told tech news agency that this was to be expected. (For the record, he was one of the people who showed up in person that first day.)


“Just as we expected, a very careful toe-in-water for people,” Lang told the protocol.
