A recent report from Jon Peddie Research revealed that NVIDIA continues to dominate the AIB GPU market with an 88% market share, while AMD only holds 12% and Intel has 0%. In the first quarter of 2024, 8.7 million units were shipped, with NVIDIA’s market share increasing by 8% compared to the previous quarter, while AMD’s share decreased by 7%. Intel entered the market in Q3 2022 but has not gained significant traction, leaving NVIDIA as the clear leader.
According to JPR, AIB shipments decreased by -7.9% in the first quarter, which is above the 10-year average. Total shipments increased by 39% compared to the previous year, with AMD experiencing a 41% decrease in desktop AIB unit shipments and NVIDIA seeing a 0.9% increase. NVIDIA’s dominance remains strong at 88% market share.
Dr. Jon Peddie, Chairman of Jon Peddie Research, commented on the market trends, noting that the industry had been hoping for a return to seasonality after facing disruptions from various events such as the 2007-2008 recession, cryptocurrency craze, and the impacts of Covid and the Ukraine war. Despite a slight dip in the first quarter of 2024, the industry expects growth in the upcoming quarter, primarily driven by AI training systems on hyperscalers. This shift in demand could affect the gaming segment as AI trainers also utilize GPUs, leading to a potential increase in AI training GPU shipments in the following quarter.
Overall, the AIB GPU market continues to be dominated by NVIDIA, with AMD trailing behind and Intel struggling to gain traction. Industry experts anticipate further growth in AI training GPU shipments, which could impact the gaming segment in the future.
