Ten years after it first launched, the Nvidia Shield TV streaming box has gained a loyal following, and the devices continue to get updates – and one of Nvidia’s executives has hinted that a new refresh of the hardware might eventually see the light of day.
In a detailed Ars Technica report, Nvidia’s senior VP of hardware engineering Andrew Bell says that he’d “love to” see a new Shield TV box one day, and that it’s something that’s not completely off the table at Nvidia.
“We’re always playing in the labs, trying to discover new things,” says Bell. “We’ve played with new concepts for Shield and we’ll continue to play, and if we find something we’re super-excited about, we’ll probably make a go of it.”
The article covers the entire history of the Nvidia Shield TV series, from the launch of the first model in 2015. Since then we’ve seen updated models appear in 2017 and 2019, and that 2019 version of the Android streaming and gaming box is still on sale.
The updates will keep coming
According to Bell, the Nvidia Shield TV 2019 is still selling well, despite its age. One of the reasons for that is likely to be that users know Nvidia is committed to pushing out new software patches to keep the device up to date and secure.
