Summary

  • Nvidia could be developing a refreshed Shield TV with AV1, Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support.
  • The company has promised lifetime software support for the Nvidia Shield and won’t discontinue current models.
  • Despite being several years old, the Shield TV still sells.

Despite launching 10 years ago in 2015, Nvidia’s Shield TV remains one of the most popular Android TV boxes out there for power users that are serious about streaming and self-hosting.

The streaming device has been refreshed several times over the years, including most recently in 2019 with the Tegra X1+-powered Shield TV and Shield TV Pro. Fast-forward seven years to 2026, and it looks like the GPU giant might finally be working on a new Nvidia Shield TV, though details remain scarce.

In a recent interview with Ars Technica (via Pocket-lint), Andrew Bell, Nvidia’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, said that the company is exploring new hardware for its Shield TV lineup. Bell goes on to state that a refreshed Nvidia Shield TV would support modern video codecs like AV1 and higher-end HDR, including Dolby Vision and Samsung’s HDR10+.
