Nvidia (NVDA, Financials) is facing renewed political scrutiny after U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren called for Chief Executive Jensen Huang to testify before Congress over the Trump administration’s decision to approve sales of the company’s advanced AI chips to China.
Speaking on the Senate floor, Warren urged Huang and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to explain how the policy shift aligns with national security priorities. Her remarks followed President Donald Trump’s announcement that his administration would allow exports of Nvidia’s H200 chip, the company’s second-most advanced artificial intelligence processor, to Chinese customers under a licensing framework.
Warren also asked whether the administration may get in the way of a Justice Department crackdown on H200 chip smuggling on the same day. She warned that the choice may give Beijing more power to snoop and build up its military.
The White House made a clear distinction between illegal smuggling and legal shipments that need to be checked for national security. Nvidia claimed that it would require authorization from the Chinese government to sell chips there, and that these sales will only be a small part of overall advanced semiconductor exports.
Chipmakers and officials are still at odds as Washington tries to reconcile corporate interests with efforts to restrict China’s access to cutting-edge technology.
