Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang has rejected warnings from AI researchers that increasingly powerful artificial intelligence could threaten human survival, calling predictions of extinction by the end of the decade “doomsday narratives” and saying there is “0% chance” that 2030 will be the end of the world.
Huang made the comments in an interview with CBS News published Sept. 20, as a growing divide has emerged among technology executives over how quickly frontier AI should be developed and how much government oversight should be imposed.
The dispute comes as researchers and executives at several leading AI companies have warned that increasingly autonomous systems could become difficult to control, while President Donald Trump and Nvidia have argued that excessive regulation could weaken U.S. technological competitiveness, particularly against China.
Huang: Extinction warnings are not grounded in science
Huang was responding to comments by former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, who said earlier this month that people building advanced AI “earnestly believe” the technology could kill humanity by the end of the decade.
Another former AI researcher, Bilal Chughtai, who previously worked at Google DeepMind, subsequently warned that AI could potentially “kill all humans.” Reuters reported that Chughtai resigned from DeepMind in July and said that avoiding such an outcome would require coordinated action among AI companies.
