Nvidia Corp. (NVDA, Financials), the AI chipmaker, is expanding its footprint in Europe with plans to invest in four German startups.

The companies are Agile Robots, Avelios Medical, Mirelo and Reflex Aerospace. Nvidia did not disclose how much it plans to invest in each.

The investments are part of a broader commitment of nearly $10 billion to European companies, universities and research institutions.

That makes the strategy bigger than venture funding alone.

Nvidia is also working more closely with Germany’s federal government and the country’s Industry 4.0 Platform to accelerate AI adoption across manufacturing and other industrial sectors.

Siemens provided an early example of what that could look like.

The company unveiled new Nvidia-powered AI tools at its Erlangen factory and said the technology could reduce engineering work needed to prepare production by as much as 85%. AI-driven production planning could also cut costs by up to 20%.

For Nvidia, the opportunity is straightforward.

The more European companies build AI into factories, robotics, health care and aerospace, the larger the addressable market becomes for its hardware and software ecosystem.

The next thing to watch is how quickly those investments translate into commercial deployments and infrastructure spending.
