Nutanix streamlines the management and operations of Kubernetes clusters

Nutanix, a hybrid multi-cloud computing company, has unveiled the Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP) at its .NEXT conference in Barcelona. This new technology aims to simplify the management of modern container-based applications using Kubernetes. NKP offers a CNCF-compliant cloud-native stack that allows platform engineering teams to securely manage Kubernetes clusters across on-premises, hybrid, and multi-cloud environments. It is targeted at a new breed of Kubernetes platform engineering teams to deliver business resiliency, day 2 operations, and compliance to modern applications at scale.

With NKP, customers can manage clusters running containers on Nutanix locally and in the public cloud from a single interface, streamlining operations and reducing complexity and costs. Moreover, organizations can also manage clusters in non-Nutanix environments, including popular public cloud Kubernetes services, facilitating faster innovation by removing barriers to adopting cloud-native architectures.

NKP is available in three tiers, catering to customers at different stages of cloud-native adoption. NKP Starter is included in Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure and replaces the existing Nutanix Kubernetes Engine, offering turnkey clusters with upstream Kubernetes. NKP Pro includes cloud-native projects for securely running and operating individual clusters, along with integrated Nutanix data services for Kubernetes deployment on Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure. Lastly, NKP Ultimate provides fleet management capabilities for installing, running, and monitoring clusters in the public cloud.

According to Tobi Knaup, general manager of cloud native at Nutanix, NKP simplifies the deployment, security, and management of Kubernetes clusters across on-premises and public cloud environments, supporting the company’s vision of enabling customers to run modern applications and their data anywhere. NKP helps companies manage the operational complexity of running enterprise-grade Kubernetes deployments and integrates with Nutanix’s data services portfolio, offering scalable storage and databases as a service.

NKP is aligned with Project Beacon, a Nutanix initiative to deploy more containerized and cloud-native applications that can run anywhere. It enables organizations to manage Kubernetes applications and data, as well as modern data services available in public clouds, on-premises, at the edge, and on other hypervisors. NKP is based on mature Kubernetes management technologies acquired by Nutanix in 2023 from D2iQ. The platform is expected to be available in summer 2024.
