The head of Nine Entertainment has called on the Prime Minister to prioritize a policy that forces global platforms to compensate local media as artificial intelligence-powered Big Tech companies disrupt the revenue models of publishers around the world.
Matt Stanton, Nine’s chief executive, said at the company’s half-year financial results presentation on Tuesday that the government’s long-awaited new negotiating stimulus was at risk of being further delayed.
“Not only is this policy hugely important to Nine and the journalism in which we invest so much, it will also have long-term impacts on the health of our democratic nation, the voices of its communities and the wider economy,” Stanton said.
“We encourage the Prime Minister to make the News Media Bargaining Code a higher priority on the policy agenda than it is currently, to ensure implementation does not slip by the end of 2026.”
