Intel Arc, Intel’s discrete GPUs, have not been receiving much attention from enthusiasts due to a rocky launch and positioning at the lower end of the market. However, the company is gearing up for the release of its second-generation GPUs under the codename “Battle Mage.”
The next-generation discrete GPUs will be built using Intel’s “Xe2” GPU architecture, with at least two different chips known as “BMG X2” and “BMG X3.” There was initially talk of a BMG-G10 GPU, but it seems to have been cancelled in favor of these new chips. The “BMG” naming scheme confirms that the project is still ongoing, with leaks and shipping logs providing some insight into the specifications of these upcoming GPUs.
The BMG X3 is rumored to feature 28 Xe2 EUs, making it an Xe2-based version of the Arc A750 GPU. Intel has made architectural improvements for Xe2, aiming for efficiency rather than top-tier performance. Despite this, rumors suggest that Intel is targeting RTX 4070 Ti performance with Battlemage, which could make it an attractive option for consumers looking for a balance of performance and efficiency at a reasonable price.
The Battle Mage GPUs are expected to be released during the holiday season, and if Intel can deliver on its promises, it may be able to capture a significant portion of the market share. Overall, while Intel’s previous efforts with Arc GPUs may have left some unenthused, the upcoming Battle Mage GPUs show promise for the company’s future in the discrete GPU market.
