AI models are being used in schools around the world, in a huge experiment on children with uncertain outcomes.

Now, new research provides a clue about technology’s impact on children’s education, and it’s not promising. AI poses significant risks to children’s social and intellectual development—and the consequences could be devastating, according to a new study from the Brookings Institution’s Center for Universal Education.

“At this point in its development, the risks of using generative AI in child education outweigh its benefits,” says the report, which should give pause to school teachers across America who have increased their use of AI from 34 to 61 percent.

The year-long project came to this alarming conclusion after interviews, consultations and discussions with 505 students, parents, teachers, educational leaders and technicians.
