New Layout of Intel Arrow Lake-S Desktop CPU Die Disclosed, Lion Cove P-Cores & Skymont E-Cores Reorganized


Intel’s upcoming Arrow Lake-S desktop CPU design has been revealed, showing a new layout for the P-Core and E-Core clusters. The architecture features Lion Cove P-Cores and Skymont E-Cores tightly packed together, indicating significant internal restructuring compared to previous designs.

Based on a block diagram shared by Kepler on Twitter, it appears that the P-Cores and E-Cores will be closely integrated in Arrow Lake CPUs. The CPUs will boast up to 8 P-Cores utilizing Lion Cove architecture and 16 E-Cores based on Skymont E-Core architecture, resulting in a total of 24 cores and 24 threads without hyperthreading support.

The Arrow Lake CPUs will feature 3.0 MB L2 cache per core and a total of 24 MB L3 cache shared across all cores. Skymont E-Cores will have 4 MB L2 cache per cluster and 3 MB of L3 cache per cluster. This new layout is aimed at enhancing inter-chip communication within the CPUs, which can improve workload allocation and reduce latencies in data processing.

By grouping E-Cores with P-Cores instead of separating them as in previous designs, Intel aims to optimize communication pathways and reduce travel time within the chip structure. This new arrangement is expected to address intercommunication issues seen in previous chip generations like Alder Lake and Raptor Lake.

The Thread Director feature on Arrow Lake CPUs will prioritize E-Cores for certain functions and P-Cores for high-performance tasks, providing flexibility for OEMs to customize workload scheduling based on requirements. The architecture is set to launch in desktop CPUs first, with plans to expand to mobile devices in the future.

Overall, Intel’s Arrow Lake-S desktop CPU design represents a significant evolution in core architecture, signaling a new direction in high-performance computing.
