Google has partnered with RapidSOS to introduce a new feature that allows Android users to send messages to 911 emergency call centers using Rich Communication Services (RCS). This will provide users with more features and capabilities compared to sending SMS text messages to 911. The new feature will be rolled out later this winter.

Currently, users can contact 911 via SMS text messages in select locations, but it is only available in about 53% of US emergency call centers and has limitations due to its SMS-only nature. By using RCS in Google Messages, users will be able to receive read receipts and write indicators from first responders, ensuring that their message is received and understood.

With RCS, users can also send high-resolution photos and videos to emergency call centers, which can help first responders assess the situation more accurately and provide faster assistance. Additionally, users will be able to automatically share their precise location and other important information through the Android Emergency Location Service, including spoken language and medical information if voluntarily provided. This can be crucial in emergency situations where the individual is unable to communicate effectively.

Through the partnership with RapidSOS, RCS support will be extended to all 911 call centers in the US at no cost, starting this winter. Google aims to make RCS the standard for emergency services text messaging nationwide, providing users with more advanced features and enhancing the overall effectiveness of emergency response services.
