After an extraordinary week marked by the apparent disintegration of the global rules-based order in Davos and the federal coalition in Canberra, it feels like we are limping into the Australia Day long weekend with a pretty good idea of the biggest issues facing the nation. But have we already lost sight of the story that is likely to shape 2026?
Certainly one cannot escape the feeling that we have achieved a real break with the past in both geopolitics and domestic politics. But when World Economic Forum elites weren’t discussing the fate of a small Nordic island, there was little doubt about what they saw as the most pressing challenge facing the world this year: the fate of the artificial intelligence boom.
