New BIOS updates address stability issues for Intel 13th & 14th Gen CPUs following eTVB bug confirmation.

Intel has confirmed a faulty algorithm in the eTVB feature on 13th and 14th generation CPUs, causing stability issues and increased voltage. The root cause is not the microcode for this feature, but a new patch in a BIOS update aims to fix a separate bug.

Reports of instability in these 13th and 14th generation chips have been linked to this issue, prompting the release of new BIOS updates to address the problem. These updates are being provided by motherboard manufacturers, such as MSI for its Z790 series, to ensure users have access to the fixes as soon as possible.

In response to the instability reports, Intel stated that the eTVB error and the instability issues are separate. The company acknowledged that older BIOS settings allowing the processor to run at high frequencies and voltages contributed to the instability. However, a bug in the eTVB algorithm was discovered, and Intel has developed a patch for it. The patch will be deployed as part of BIOS updates by July 19, 2024, with recommendations for power delivery profile settings for the affected processors.

Intel advised users to check their motherboard vendor’s website for the latest BIOS updates and recommended using default configuration settings for improved performance. However, using default settings may decrease performance by 10-20% in certain applications due to a lower power threshold. This workaround is not ideal for high-powered CPUs like those in the 13th and 14th generation Intel Core processors.

The underlying stability issue in these processors has not been fully resolved, leading to disappointment among users who expected top-of-the-line performance from Intel’s latest offerings. The impact of minor bugs on the CPU performance raises questions about the quality assurance process during pre-release testing. Overall, users experiencing these issues are not satisfied with the current situation.
