In a recent benchmarking test, Ghost of Tsushima was analyzed on various CPUs and GPUs to assess its performance on a gaming PC. The game was found to run smoothly overall, except for two GPUs: the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT and the Intel Arc A770. The Radeon RX 7800 XT crashed after a few seconds of gameplay, while the Intel Arc A770 exhibited visual glitches and subpar performance.
Intel provided the journalist with a limited edition Bow A770 GPU for further testing, as the Acer Predator version had shown some instability. After overcoming some driver installation issues, the new Arc card performed better in rendering tasks such as upscaling and frame generation.
However, the performance of the Arc A770 was still lacking compared to other GPUs like the Radeon RX 6750 XT and the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti. Despite having similar specifications on paper, the Arc A770 struggled in rendering workloads, particularly noticeable in high-resolution settings and heavy rendering tasks like in Ghost of Tsushima.
Various performance tests using Vulkan and Intel GPA software revealed that the Arc A770 was behind in FP32 multiplication instructions and overall rendering tasks, despite having good internal bandwidth and cache latency. Intel’s commitment to releasing driver updates may improve performance, but ultimately, the issues may be rooted in the architecture of the Alchemist GPU.
Looking towards the future, the upcoming Battlemage GPU on Lunar Lake chips shows promise for Intel’s graphics cards. However, the competition, such as AMD’s Radeon RX 7800 XT, continues to lead the market. Despite patches to improve stability for Radeon GPUs in Ghost of Tsushima, Intel still faces challenges in catching up to its competitors.
Overall, the testing results suggest that Intel has some ground to make up in the GPU market, particularly in performance and compatibility with demanding games like Ghost of Tsushima. The article highlights the importance of architecture and driver optimization in achieving optimal gaming performance on PC.
