A massive 916,000-pound cold box, used in the silicon chip manufacturing process, recently arrived at the construction site in New Albany where Intel’s future facilities will be located. This extra-large supercharger, measuring 23 feet high, 20 feet wide, and 280 feet long, was transported to Ohio by barge on the Ohio River and then picked up at a port in Adams County. The journey, which began on June 16, took 10 days to cover the distance from Adams County to Licking County, as the cargo typically moves at less than 10 miles per hour.

Matt Bruning, a spokesperson for the Ohio Department of Transportation, emphasized the extensive planning involved in moving such a large and heavy load. Special considerations include ensuring that the route is clear of overpasses and that traffic signals can be moved. ODOT also takes into account local events and festivals to minimize disruptions to daily traffic.

This particular cold box is one of the required superchargers for Intel’s new installations, with a total of approximately two dozen needed. It is the first of four extra-large superchargers, and ODOT strategically scheduled its delivery after the July 4 holiday to reduce the impact on local communities, especially schools.

Throughout the ten-day journey, the cold box attracted significant public interest. Residents along the route came out daily to witness and document the passage of this extraordinary cargo. Bruning pointed out that the arrival of such equipment is a positive development for Ohio’s economy, as it will bring in new investments and job opportunities.

Overall, the transportation of the cold box to the Intel construction site was a carefully planned and executed operation that garnered public attention and excitement. People were eager to witness the arrival of this massive piece of equipment, highlighting the significance of the project for the local economy and job market. By ensuring the safe and timely delivery of the superchargers, ODOT played a crucial role in facilitating the growth and development of Intel’s future facilities in New Albany.
