In the latest edition of Cisco Global Network Trends, a study conducted in November 2023 by Cisco and IDC found that companies will be incorporating advanced network architectures and capabilities into their environments over the next two years. This will enable them to do more with limited human resources and redefine the network’s contribution to their bottom line.

The research included responses from over 2,000 IT leaders and professionals across 13 markets and 10 industries, focusing on their networking challenges, priority outcomes, architectural advancements, and investment strategies. The report highlighted three key trends: the platform, security, and artificial intelligence (AI).

One of the transformative approaches identified in the study is the adoption of a centralized network management platform, which can provide greater visibility, connectivity, and security in a world with various types of workloads and clouds. Cybersecurity emerged as a top concern, with respondents recognizing the value of AI-generated insights in staying ahead of threats.

AI is expected to play a significant role in modernizing infrastructures, enhancing network performance, predicting failures, and diagnosing issues. The report also outlined advancements in areas such as network architecture transformation, integrated partner ecosystems, digital experience guarantees, and data center modernization to drive digital business.

The convergence of network and security technologies emerged as a top priority to address security concerns as cloud adoption continues. Automation through AI-enabled predictive network automation is seen as a strategy to streamline operations, enhance security, and optimize the digital experience.

Additionally, data center infrastructure modernization is expected to meet the demands for AI workloads and new applications. Advancing sustainability is also a key focus, with IT departments seeking network platform features to improve telemetry, visibility, and promote sustainability goals.

Jonathan Davidson, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Cisco Networking, emphasized the transformative power of innovations like the cloud and AI in driving network evolution. The interconnected nature of these technologies highlights the importance of the network in enabling and supporting transformative changes.

Overall, the Cisco Global Network Trends report provides valuable insights into the key trends and challenges driving network transformation in the coming years. The adoption of advanced network architectures, security measures, and AI technologies are expected to reshape how businesses operate and leverage their networks to drive success.
