NASA’s Perseverance rover is preparing to collect its first rock samples on Mars that will eventually return to Earth.

Looking at the bottom of an old lake bed, Perseverance is traveling to a location south of its original landing in February to begin the 11-day sampling process. NASA announced Wednesday. The targeted rocks are described as pale, flat cobblestones that NASA hopes will give a good basic idea of what the wider region is geologically like.
