NASA has announced a collaboration with IBM Research to develop a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) model called the Privthi Weather Baseline Model. This AI model is designed to support various weather and climate applications by using AI as an analytical tool for climate scenarios. The model is trained on a wide data set from the Modern Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA-2), making it adaptable for different applications.
Once trained, the AI model can apply data in various scenarios, providing valuable tools for weather, seasonal, and climate projections. NASA’s Earth Sciences Division director, Karen St. Germain, believes that this model can be beneficial for decision-making related to climate preparation, response, and mitigation. Kevin Murphy, NASA’s Chief Scientific Data Officer, also highlights that this AI model will improve data accessibility and reduce barriers to using NASA scientific data.
The collaboration on the Privthi Weather Baseline Model is not limited to IBM Research and NASA. Oak Ridge National Laboratory and NASA’s Interagency Implementation and Advanced Concept Team (IMPACT) are also involved in its development. The model can capture complex atmospheric dynamics that aid scientists in predicting adverse weather patterns, detecting natural disasters, and enhancing global climate simulations.
