Well, it’s not even 9 a.m. on the first Monday morning in May and already huge acquisitions are underway. Embracer Groupthe ever-growing gaming company that owns THQ Nordic, among others, has decided to start the week by buying Square Enix studios for $300 million, of course.
Yes, so if the deal goes through – which is expected to happen between July and September 2023 – Square Enix will hand over Crystal Dynamics, Eidos and Square Enix Montreal to Swedish company Embracer Group.
This is also pretty big news in terms of IP. Together with their respective developers, Embracer Group holds the rights Tomb Raider, deus ex and Thief, among other series. If the deal goes through, Square Enix will no longer fund or publish games from those franchises.
There could be other implications for Xbox as well. Recall, Microsoft recently reached an agreement with Crystal Dynamics to bring the studio into its Perfect Dark project. crystal dynamics, the Tomb Raider developer, is now set to lead the Perfect Dark reboot in partnership with Xbox’s studio The Initiative. However, at least for now, it looks like things are going as planned.
