- A new rumor has it that Motorola will be the first company to use Samsung’s 200MP camera sensor.
- Xiaomi could follow suit later in 2022.
- Samsung is expected to launch a 200-megapixel camera phone in 2023.
Samsung launched its 200MP Isocell HP1 Camera sensor as early as September without clearly confirming which manufacturers will be allowed to use it in the future. Now we may have a better idea of which companies might get our hands on it first.
It’s unclear which Motorola model gets the honor, but the tipster suggests the teased Moto Edge X will be the first to sport two new OmniVision sensors in the same post.

What about Samsung and Xiaomi?
The latest rumors contradict initial suspicions that Xiaomi would beat its rivals with the 200MP punch. Early tips suggested that Xiaomi would be the first to use the sensor, but we haven’t had any confirmation from the company yet. Digital Chat Station assumes that Xiaomi is still testing the sensor, while Ice Universe assumes that the company will launch another device in the second half of 2022.
As for Samsung, according to Ice Universe, the company will only be allowed to launch a 200 MP camera phone in 2023. That is still quite a while away. There’s no telling whether Samsung will use the Isocell HP1 or a rework of the sensor in a future phone.
Samsung has increased the megapixel ante in the past few years. But despite focusing on the amount of megapixels, this isn’t the only factor affecting the performance of a smartphone camera. When making your purchase decision, you should consider Sensor and pixel size, Software processing power and aperture, among other factors.
