As artificial intelligence traffic cameras become standard across Australia, concerns about their accuracy are increasing, particularly when it comes to detecting cell phone and seat belt violations. With AI-powered enforcement now in use across the country, more and more drivers are challenging notices of violations and taking their cases to court.
AI cameras are designed to automatically detect illegal cell phone use and seat belt violations and capture images that can result in fines and penalty points. However, according to Avinash Singh, a top traffic lawyer at Astor Legal, the technology is far from foolproof. Singh warned that the systems often misinterpret ordinary objects as cell phones.

“AI cameras are notoriously unreliable, particularly when it comes to detecting cell phone usage,” Singh said. “Technology often confuses other items with phones. We’ve seen cases where wallets, glasses cases and even batteries have been mislabeled.”
