Intel’s upcoming Arrow Lake desktop gaming CPUs may be easier to keep cool and overclock due to a new mounting system called RL-ILM. This system puts less pressure on the chip compared to the current LGA1700 mount, leading to better contact with CPU coolers.

Currently, some CPU coolers struggle to properly cool Intel’s 12th, 13th, and 14th Gen chips because the LGA1700 mount can exert too much force on the chip, causing it to slightly bend. This bending can result in poor contact between the chip’s integrated heatsink and typical CPU coolers.

To address this issue, CPU cooler manufacturers have made adjustments to their products, such as grinding the bases to be more convex or including shims to reduce mounting system stress. However, a hardware leaker named Jaykihn X has suggested that Intel’s upcoming Arrow Lake CPUs will use a new LGA1851 socket with two mounting options, including the RL-ILM system that improves thermal performance.

Jaykihn noted that the RL-ILM system requires a minimum load force of 35 pounds on the CPU for proper operation, which may not be suitable for cheaper coolers that use plastic clips. Instead, premium coolers with additional backplates will likely be needed to properly support the RL-ILM system.

It is possible that cheaper motherboards may use the standard ILM system, while enthusiast motherboards may opt for the RL-ILM system, which is slightly more expensive but offers better performance with high-end coolers.

More details on the new mounting system are still unknown, and it remains to be seen if this will create confusion in the market for buyers. However, the RL-ILM system seems like a positive step towards improving cooling and overclocking capabilities for Intel’s Arrow Lake CPUs.

Alternatively, consumers could consider opting for an AMD AM5 CPU, such as the AMD Ryzen 7600X Processor, which does not have similar mounting problems.
