Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is on track to spend about $500 million annually on Anthropic’s AI models as the software giant deepens its push to power more products and cloud offerings with third party AI, according to a report from The Information.
The report said Microsoft has become one of Anthropic’s top customers and is increasing internal usage of Anthropic models across products such as GitHub Copilot, Microsoft 365 Copilot, and Security Copilot. As of mid 2025, Microsoft was already spending more than $40 million per month on Anthropic models, a pace that has since accelerated as usage expanded.
Microsoft is also encouraging broader adoption by its cloud customers. Azure sales staff are now incentivized to sell Anthropic models, with those sales counting toward quotas in the same way as Microsoft built software. The incentive structure currently runs through the end of June.
