Microsoft will implement new consumer-friendly policies for its cloud computing business today.

The US software giant’s biggest change will allow consumers to create or install Microsoft licenses for the service of any cloud provider — even providers that compete with Microsoft. This change effectively opens up the market for cloud service providers, allowing small cloud companies to offer Microsoft products to their customers.

The changes are thanks to EU regulators, as the EU antitrust agency has fined Microsoft $1.7 billion over the past decade for its habit of locking consumers into its cloud ecosystem. Microsoft has decided to change its policies to…
