Australia’s decision to establish a national tripartite AI employment and workplace forum is timely and welcome. The coming together of government, employers and unions reflects a shared recognition that the success of artificial intelligence will be measured not only by its technological capabilities, but also by whether it delivers fair, inclusive outcomes for workers and society. It is also a practical way to advance the ambitions of the National AI Plan, particularly given its focus on spreading economic opportunity while managing risk.
AI is already transforming work in finance, media, healthcare, education, manufacturing and the public sector. The pace of adoption is accelerating and so is the scale of change in Australian workplaces. The question now is not whether AI will be adopted, but how and on whose terms.
