In 2020, Microsoft released Cascadia Code, an open-source monospace font that is the default font for the Windows Terminal application. Cascadia Code is designed for code and terminal editing and offers a wide range of programming ligatures, making it a modern, clear, and readable font. Recently, the font received its first update in almost three years, adding 1,140 new glyphs, including legacy computer symbols and large type pieces based on Unicode 16.0 specification.
The updated version of Cascadia Code also includes Nerd Font variants, Cascadia NF code, and Cascadia Mono NF, which offer a full range of Nerd Font glyphs as of April 2024. These glyphs can enhance the visual information conveyed through coding and command line environments. Microsoft showcased the updated font using Ubuntu for WSL on the Windows Terminal app in their demo.
Users who have an older version of Cascadia Code installed are advised to remove it before replacing it with the new version to avoid bad rendering. The font can be downloaded from Microsoft’s GitHub page. Overall, the update to Cascadia Code brings a significant improvement with new glyphs and Nerd Font variants for developers and users who rely on the font for coding and terminal editing.
