Microsoft should spin off its Windows and Office franchises to boost its growing cloud computing business, former CEO Ben Slivka said in an interview with CNBC.

“Probably betting the future on the cloud is the right thing to do,” said Slivka, former general manager of Microsoft’s Consumer and Commerce Group.

The Azure cloud infrastructure that companies use to power applications has become a corporate star and the most intimidating competition to date against market-leading companies Amazon internet services.

Azure’s impressive growth has reignited investor interest in the tech company decades after its dominance in operating systems and productivity software. Microsoft stock is up 51% in 2021, compared to about 27% for the S&P 500 index.
