We’re excited to announce that Microsoft is the leader in 2021 Gartner® Magic Quadrant ™ for Cloud Database Management Systems.1 This placement reflects our full vision and ability to execute, and we believe it is evidence of our continued innovation and integration of a comprehensive cloud data management ecosystem into Microsoft’s end-to-end data platform.
Today’s companies are modernizing their data platforms as part of a more comprehensive digital transformation and must rely on data as strategic capital and competitive advantage. Azure offers a full suite of solutions for businesses looking to accelerate their recovery from economic uncertainty. Gartner evaluates these use cases against 15 different criteria to determine their placement in the Magic Quadrant.

An end-to-end data platform
Microsoft released the first version of SQL Server almost thirty years ago. Since then we have delivered a steady stream of innovations that offer our customers constant added value. Today we have evolved into a complete end-to-end data platform that focuses on three core functions that companies need for successful digital transformation:
- Unlimited database performance and scalability.
- Unmatched analysis and insight.
- Uniform data management.
Indeed ours is last announcement of SQL Server 2022 in the preview version shows our most Azure-capable SQL Server version to date with Azure SQL Managed Instance, Azure Synapse Analytics and Azure Purview integrations in a single product.
We keep investing in ours Azure SQL Family of databases to provide flexible options for app migration, modernization, and development. With up to 16 TB of storage, storage-optimized hardware, and native Azure Virtual Network support, SQL Managed Instance enables companies to modernize their mission-critical workloads to a fully managed service while providing the best on-premises SQL Server features and functionality. In addition, hyperscale and serverless computing on SQL databases facilitate future-proof applications in a cost-effective manner.
Azure is also the best cloud for NoSQL and open source databases. Azure Cosmos DB is a fully managed NoSQL database designed to support production applications of any size and scale. We make it easy for developers to independently and elastically scale applications in any Azure region. New provision options in our open source databases offer our customers maximum control in addition to integrated functions for optimizing costs and increasing productivity.
We’re building a full analytics continuum with the goal of making real-time, intelligent data insights accessible to people in every company. Since the debut of Azure Synapse Analysis, the number of Azure customers running petabyte workloads has increased fivefold. Shortly afterwards we introduced ourselves Azure Synapse Link for Azure Cosmos DBwho built a simple, cloud-native HTAP solution for real-time business insights. We go a step further and recently announced the general availability of Azure Synapse link for Dataverse. This service enables instant insights with high quality Microsoft Dynamics data.
Unified data governance is critical to today’s business. Azure monitoring, our Unified Data Governance Service, helps companies manage and manage their on-premise, multi-cloud and software-as-a-service (SaaS) data. With over 57 billion databases already discovered by customers, Azure Purview ensures that your Microsoft database is managed through deep integrations with data services in Azure, Microsoft 365, Power Platform and more.
When you build your applications on Microsoft’s comprehensive and connected platform, more of your data is instantly available to provide more insights that make your business smarter and create a flywheel that drives your business forward.
Global insights and dynamics
According to Gartner, among the segments of public cloud services for companies, database platform as a service and cloud infrastructure and platform services recorded the fastest growth in 2020 with 50.8 percent and 43.2 percent respectively compared to the previous year.3 This growth is mainly driven by ongoing application migrations to the cloud, data center consolidations and digital business initiatives.
Data and analytics are central to how companies do business through a digital lens. In fact, chief data officers (CDOs) who successfully demonstrate the return on investment on their data and analytics investments are 1.7 times more likely to consistently generate clear business value. Additionally, they’re 2.3 times more likely to reduce time to market and 3.5 times more likely to monetize their data.4th Gareth Herschel, Research Vice President at Gartner, wrote, “As companies try to recover from the profound disruptions of last year, D&A [data and analytics] can help with tasks such as enabling business model transformation, optimizing resource allocation or finding new ways to connect employees, customers and other stakeholders. “5
