Microsoft introduces new ‘Volumetric Apps’ for Quest headsets, bringing Windows apps into the 3D space | TechCrunch

Microsoft revealed at its annual Build conference that it will be introducing “Windows volumetric apps” to the Meta Quest headset through a new partnership. This collaboration will allow Microsoft to bring Windows 365 and local PC connectivity to the Quest headset, enabling developers to extend their applications into the 3D space.

During the event, Microsoft’s corporate vice president of Windows and devices, Pavan Davuluri, expressed enthusiasm about the deepening partnership with Meta, aiming to enhance the Windows experience on Quest devices. The goal is to leverage Quest’s unique capabilities to expand Windows applications into 3D space, providing users with new immersive experiences.

Developers have the opportunity to sign up for a developer preview to access a “volumetric API” that will facilitate spatial understanding within applications. Microsoft’s registration page specifies that they are seeking developers who create add-ons for 3D Windows desktop applications or users working with 3D applications interested in transitioning them to reality-enabled 3D content.

In addition to this new development, Microsoft is collaborating with Meta to design a limited edition Meta Quest VR headset inspired by the Xbox. Furthermore, the company introduced Microsoft 365 productivity experiences from applications like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on Quest late last year.

Overall, the partnership between Microsoft and Meta aims to enhance the immersive experience of Windows applications on the Quest headset by incorporating 3D elements. Developers are encouraged to explore the possibilities of extending their applications into this new reality-enabled 3D space through a “volumetric API” provided by Microsoft. This move represents a significant step towards merging traditional desktop applications with cutting-edge VR technology, creating new opportunities for innovation and enhanced user experiences in the digital realm.
