Microsoft introduces AI-powered Advanced Paste feature for PowerToys in Copy & Paste functionality

Tech companies like Microsoft are expanding the use of AI in everyday computer functions like copy and paste. Microsoft has introduced an optional AI layer for copy and paste functionality on Windows computers through the latest version of Microsoft PowerToys. By installing PowerToys version 0.81.0 or later and enabling Advanced Paste support, users can access AI-enhanced options for pasting recently copied content with a new Win+Shift+V keyboard shortcut.

The Advanced Paste feature offers options to paste content as plain text, markdown, JSON, or with AI capabilities. Users can choose to leverage OpenAI for more advanced capabilities in pasting text, but this feature comes with a cost. Users will need to register for an OpenAI account, input their API key in the PowerToys settings menu, and use credits from their OpenAI account to access the Paste Text with AI feature. If users run out of credits, they will need to purchase more before using the feature.

The AI-based features in PowerToys version 0.81.0 offer functionalities such as summarizing text, translating text, generating code, transforming text, and stylizing text. However, the results of these AI-based features may be unpredictable, as artificial intelligence is still in its early stages. Microsoft’s example of asking AI to rewrite sentences about the Advanced Paste functionality in the style of Mark Twain resulted in somewhat heartless outputs.

In addition to the Advanced Paste feature, PowerToys version 0.81.0 includes a new Command Module feature that suggests applications or packages to install when users input unrecognized commands in the PowerShell command-line interface. This feature helps users quickly find and install appropriate applications without leaving the command-line interface.
