Microsoft grows Grand Rapids data center plan amid local pushback

Microsoft Corp. is in the process of acquiring additional property to add to the 356-acre site the company has amassed south of Grand Rapids for a planned data center.

The Gaines Township Planning Commission is set to consider a revised rezoning application tied to the project on April 15, which will include an “expanded scope” for the development, said Dan Wells, the township’s community development director. Microsoft is working to acquire nearly 58 acres of Steelcase Inc.’s old wood plant property, Wells said, which is adjacent to the proposed project site.

In an email to Crain’s Grand Rapids Business, a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed the company is “working through the process of purchasing a small amount of additional land near our site in Gaines Township.”
