Today we are at a crucial moment that is influencing the requirements of many corporate customers for digital transformation. In this place where cloud meets edge, computing meets mobile, and 5G trends continue to drive innovation, customer demand for advanced network functions is increasing. For customers, the promise of all of these converging technologies remains the ability to develop and leverage innovative solutions and experiences to keep up with a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

As a result, companies are migrating mission-critical workloads to the cloud to better serve their customers. The technologies involved are complex and companies are looking for vendors who not only sell them products, but help them innovate while developing ever greater capabilities. As new use cases and connected devices become ubiquitous, these companies need new edge application solutions close to end users to develop innovative solutions in industries as diverse as gaming, automotive, healthcare, manufacturing, and more.

The close cooperation between Microsoft and AT&T fulfills these requirements by supporting the digital transformation and development of our mutual customers. We’re bringing our collective cloud and network technologies and expertise in areas like 5G, AI and IoT to light to improve the way people live and work.

We have already made significant progress. In June we reached an important milestone than we did announced an industry-first collaboration introduce Microsoft cloud technology for AT & T’s core 5G network workloads. This enables AT&T to increase productivity, reduce costs and offer innovative services that meet the changing needs of its customers. We are also leading the way in developing new solutions that help companies cut costs while maintaining efficiency, reliability and security on the edge of their premises and facilities through features such as AT&T capable Azure Sphere and Guardian module, and AT&T MEC with Azure.

Microsoft Azure is available in more than 60 regions, more than any other cloud provider, making it easy for companies to choose the data center and regions that are best for them and their customers. For densely populated metropolises in which companies need computing resources with low latency, we extend the capabilities of Azure to the operator’s 5G network edge. Azure Edge Zones with AT&T can significantly improve the performance of an application while reducing the effort and complexity for corporate customers. A selected set of Azure services provided at the edge, which are directly connected to the 5G core from AT&T, enables latency-sensitive business scenarios through optimized routing from the Azure edge zones with AT&T to the AT&T mobility network. This enables developers to develop larger applications with lower latency, higher throughput, and greater reach.

Journey to the edge of the cellular network

Innovative enterprise customers are looking for ways to combine the next-generation network capabilities of 5G with the power of applications that are deployed closer to the customer at the edge of the network. In music, for example, we enable new experiences that were previously not possible through virtual jam sessions that offer an experience as if musicians were playing side by side – reducing latency and unleashing creativity. Working with JamKazam to enable audio and video streaming for musicians online, AT & T’s low-latency solution with Edge and 5G helped the band The perfect nine Jam without the limitations of crowded home Wi-Fi networks. By creating a unique test environment that is representative of the Microsoft Azure Edge Zone with AT&T, the low latency of 5G in combination with the EVA app provided at the network edge with Azure cloud services enabled autonomous drone control outside of the line of sight. Strong relationships can also provide numerous benefits to consumers, such as through General Motors most recent collaboration with AT&T, powered by Microsoft’s cloud services that will improve the quality of the driving experience for drivers by providing improved road-based coverage, higher quality music and video downloads, more reliable and secure over-the-air software updates and faster Navigation, map and voice services.

After the successful proof of concept in Los Angeles and the other positive developments mentioned above, we are pleased about our Azure Edge Zones with AT&T Private Preview in Atlanta. Azure Edge Zones with AT&T in Dallas and other metros will follow shortly. The momentum is increasing and your imagination is the only limit to future offers. The strategic collaboration between Microsoft and AT&T enables customers to unlock low-latency enterprise applications well beyond the traditional network and create the smart cities, roads and skyways of the future.

“5G’s performance is about more than just speed. It’s about leveraging ultra-fast and responsive connectivity with distributed cloud technology for completely new experiences. As computing extends beyond centralized systems to the edge of the 5G network, businesses and consumers now essentially have supercomputing capabilities in the air. From lightweight virtual reality interfaces that can be used by gamers and first responders to high-precision location tools for industrial applications and warehousing, the Edge is transformative. Our close cooperation with Microsoft should help customers take this leap and shape the future. ”-Andre Fuetsch, Chief Technology Officer, AT&T Network Services

We invite companies of all sizes and from every segment to create joint experiments that unlock the functions of Azure services at the edge, which are connected via AT & T’s 5G network. From using drones to 5G to support public safety and traffic management to remote patient care, autonomous in-car safety responses and powerful mobile games, the possibilities are endless.
