Communications Minister Michelle Rowland says it’s essential to understand what caused the Optus outage, which left 10 million Australians without phone service or access to the internet.

Ms Rowland said she tasked her department to establish a post-incident review to understand what happened, what went wrong, and what improvements could be made.

“My department is currently working on the terms of reference, and the government will make further announcements in due course,” Ms Rowland said during Question Time on Monday.

“This will include an examination of issues such as the adequacy of regulatory settings to support access to triple zero emergency services, amongst other important matters.

“Importantly, independently the regulator, the Australian Communications and Media Authority has also announced that it has commenced an investigation into Optus’ compliance with rules requiring emergency calls to be successfully carried from each telecommunications provider to the emergency call person who is Telstra.”
