Dell Technologies does not sell or completely lose VMware by spinning off Dell’s 81 percent stake in VMware. In fact, Dell CEO Michael Dell and private equity partner Silver Lake Partners will retain a controlling stake in VMware after the spin-off later this year.
Upon completion of the spin-off of VMware by Dell Technologies, Michael Dell is expected to own approximately 41 percent of the shares in VMware, which has been confirmed with CRN. Dell’s long-time private equity partner, Silver Lake, will hold an 11 percent stake in VMware after the spin-off, which means that Michael Dell and his private equity partner will own approximately 52 percent in VMware.
This month, Dell Technologies officially confirmed that it will spin off its 81 percent stake in VMware to current Dell Technologies shareholders in the fourth quarter of 2021. Michael Dell owns 52 percent of Dell Technologies, while Silver Lake owns approximately 14 percent.
