I read that a 20-year-old woman sued Meta and Google, claiming she became addicted to their social media apps, ruining her mental health.
I agree that YouTube, Instagram, etc., can be addictive and cause brain rot, but where does personal responsibility come into play?
Where were the woman’s parents or guardians when, at a young age, she was glued to her phone? And if the woman herself has the mental capacity to create a lawsuit, certainly she could have become cognizant of her problem in her later teens and put down her phone.
A New Mexico jury on March 24, 2026, found Meta Platforms violated state law in a lawsuit brought by the state attorney general, who accused the company of misleading users about the safety of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp and of enabling child sexual exploitation on those platforms. Meta, headed by Mark Zuckerberg, is ordered to pay $375 million in civil penalties.
