MeitY will discuss new cybersecurity rules with VPN companies on Friday


The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has invited stakeholders, including a virtual private network (VPN) companies, tech-policy groups, legal experts and other cybersecurity professionals for a consultation Friday to discuss various aspects of the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team’s (Cert-In) latest cybersecurity policies, sources told ET.

The consultation is expected to be chaired by the Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar. It was planned by the IT Department in response to a joint letter written by technology policy groups such as The dialogue, Get it now, Internet Freedom, BSA India and others.

The meeting comes just days after two VPN companies, Surfshark and
ExpressVPN has decided to discontinue its services in India after the government asked them to keep customers’ logs along with details such as name, address and the purpose for which the VPN service was used.
