With online hacking and phishing attempts, it’s more important than ever to have extra protection on our accounts. I’ve always used Microsoft Authenticator or Google Authenticator, however “Authenticator” from 2Stable is a new two-factor authentication app for Apple devices.
2Stable is a company based in Andorra. Several functions of Authenticator are outstanding. First and foremost, there is no need to create an account and all you need to do is remember a password. You can also use iCloud to sync and back up with all of your devices, including Mac and Apple Watch.
Authenticator is very easy to use and it is possible to import all of your data from Google Authenticator. Also, I’ve never seen the Apple Universal Clipboard feature work as fast as it does with this app. One tap on the iPhone, Command + V on the Mac and you’re done.
When you don’t have your iPhone nearby, you can check your codes on the Apple Watch or in the Mac app. For example, on the Mac, you can scan your screen in the app to quickly add a new account. If you might be having trouble adding your Uber account or email address, Authenticator will display the app’s FAQ to complete two-factor authentication.
With support for iOS 14 widgets, You can also select some of your accounts for easy access. Authenticator also supports biometric authentication with Touch ID and Face ID. All data is encrypted, even if it is stored in iCloud.
Currently, the team behind the app is working on U2F support, Safari, Firefox and Chrome extensions, secure account sharing, unlocking with Apple Watch and translation / localization in other languages. Although no web extensions are available, you can enter the 2FA code as long as you have at least one Apple device (iPhone, iPad, iPod, Mac, or Apple Watch) with you. And even when you are offline, the app generates secure tokens.
One thing I really liked about Authenticator is the ability to manually select your account icon. When using Microsoft’s own app, for example, there were some registrations without a picture. With this account, all of my accounts are personalized and I can even choose different icons for different services.
Authenticator is free to download, but you need to pay an annual subscription of $ 9.99 to use the full app. In the free version, the user can only add two accounts without syncing and backup functions. You can download here.
