McDonald’s is ending its test of AI-powered voice ordering at 100 drive-thru locations following viral videos of order mix-ups. The fast food chain partnered with IBM in 2021 for the system, but after a review, they have decided to retire it. Despite this, McDonald’s stated that they will continue to use IBM products, and AI experiments will continue in the future.

Videos circulating on TikTok showed the AI system making mistakes such as picking up orders from the wrong cars and creating unusual food combinations like ice cream with ketchup and butter. The company plans to make a decision on a new voice ordering system by the end of the year.
