McDonald’s concludes AI drive-thru test in partnership with IBM

McDonald’s is ending its partnership with IBM to create an automated order taker for drive-thrus due to problems with recognizing accents and dialects. The AI system, known as the Automated Order Taker (AOT), was implemented in over 100 US restaurants but will be terminated in July. The goal was to use AI to speed up processes and simplify operations, but the technology struggled with different accents, leading to order accuracy issues. Despite this setback, McDonald’s remains positive about the future of AI and plans to evaluate scalable solutions for drive-thru voice ordering. IBM confirmed the test results but is continuing discussions and pilot tests with other fast-food customers interested in AOT technology.
