SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – Markets posted modest gains during a typically quiet holiday trading week, with major indexes up about 1% as trading volume remained low.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 291 points to trade at 48,733, while the S&P 500 rose 24 points to 6,933. The NASDAQ climbed 56 points to 23,618.
Business commentator Jeffrey Stern said the gains came during a week when many traders are on vacation and focused on holiday shopping rather than market activity.
“It’s a pretty low-volume week. Everybody’s on vacation, worried about buying presents, not too much about the market,” Stern said.
The 10-year Treasury yield held steady at about 4.11%. Oil prices rose slightly to around $58 per barrel from $56. Futures showed mixed results ahead of the trading session.
Google is developing a feature that will allow users to change their Gmail usernames without losing data or existing services, according to Stern.
