More than 100 British MPs are calling on the government to introduce mandatory regulations for the most powerful AI systems, as concerns grow that ministers are moving too slowly to put in place safeguards in the face of lobbying from the tech industry.
A former AI minister and defense secretary are part of a cross-party group of Westminster MPs, peers and elected members of the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish parliaments calling for tighter controls on border systems, citing fears that super-intelligent AI would “endanger national and global security”.
The push for stricter regulation is being coordinated by a nonprofit called Control AI, whose backers include Skype co-founder Jaan Tallinn. She calls on Keir Starmer to show independence from Donald Trump’s White House, which opposes the regulation of AI. One of the technology’s “godfathers,” Yoshua Bengio, recently said it was less regulated than a sandwich.
