Western Digital recommends that My Book Live users disconnect their devices from the Internet.

Hard drive manufacturer Western Digital announced on Thursday that some users of its My Book Live cloud storage devices suddenly lost all of their data due to “malicious software” and recommended that all users disconnect their devices from the Internet.

Western Digital apparently became aware of the problem through a thread on the company’s support forum. The string, which began on Wednesday, included many complaints from users about the deletion of their data and the apparently remotely changing device passwords.

“I have a WD mybook connected live to my home LAN and it has worked fine for years,” wrote the user who started the thread. “I just noticed that somehow all the data on it is gone today, while the directories there appear to be empty. The 2T volume used to be almost full, but now it shows full capacity.”

Another user of the thread wrote, “I’ve lost 4TB of data, including all of my insurance policies, budgets, the usual life admin, and all of the photos of my kids, wedding, etc, but just as important is my livelihood. I’m a independent consultant and my last 7 months of project work are all gone. ”

Several users reported on the thread that the data loss occurred around the time a factory reset was initiated on their devices. “All of my data is gone too,” one user wrote, saying he received a dashboard message informing him of the factory reset. “I’m totally screwed without this data … years of it.”

In response to the complaints on the thread that was reported first from Bleeping Computer advised Western Digital My Live Book users to disconnect their devices to protect their data while the company investigates the source of the attack. It also said it doesn’t believe its servers have been compromised.

“Western Digital has discovered that some My Book Live devices are being compromised by malicious software,” the company wrote in a Update to the forum thread. “In some cases, this tradeoff has resulted in a factory reset that appears to have erased all of the data on the device. The My Book Live device received its last firmware update in 2015. We know that our customers’ data is very important, we recommend that you disconnect your My Book Live from the Internet to protect your data on the device. We are investigating these and will update this thread as soon as they become available. “

Western Digital representatives did not immediately respond to requests for further comments and information.
