The US Copyright Office’s request for the option of including mandatory copyright protections in the DMCA has resulted in some interesting responses. They include a proposal to add “VPN detection” tools to prevent people from engaging in “geo-piracy”. This request comes unsurprisingly from a company that offers a VPN detection service.

The United States is actively exploring ways to update copyright law to reflect the current online environment.

Last is the Copyright Office look in the possibility to make certain standard technical measures (STM) mandatory for online platforms. This might contain upload filters to prevent pirated content from being uploaded again.

The current DMCA already offers an option to formally introduce STMs, but that requires a “broad consensus” among online services that hasn’t been reached in the past two decades. Instead, many online platforms have developed their own in-house tools…
